East of Kalvebod Fælled, at the southeastern corner of Amager, lies the
atmospheric fishing village of Dragør , departure point for ferries to
Limhamn in Sweden and home to a couple of good local history museums.
The first of these, the Amager Museum (May-Sept Tues-Sun noon-4pm; Oct-April
Wed & Sun noon-4pm; 20kr), at Store Magleby village on the road leading
into Dragør, is housed in two of Amager's old four-winged farmhouses. In
the early sixteenth century, Christian II invited a group of farmers
from Holland - at the time, a more agriculturally advanced nation than
Denmark - to settle here to produce food for the royal household. Twenty-four
families arrived, and they and their descendants stayed for three
centuries, continuing to live in the Store Magleby and Dragør area and
leaving only for their weekly trips to the Amagertorv market in Indre By
- amongst their many other achievements they were responsible for
introducing the carrot to Denmark. The museum comprises two working
farms, complete with livestock and vegetable patches, their interiors
kept as they would have been at the time. Museum staff demonstrate how
the Dutch grew their crops and kept their animals, as well as explaining
the distinctive dress and cultural traditions they introduced to Denmark.

The Dragør Music Festival (last weekend in July), featuring mostly
Danish mainstream pop bands, is a good opportunity to experience a real
village festival, with lots of good food and a splendid habourside view.

The summer-only Dragør Museum (May-Sept Tues-Fri 2-5pm, Sat & Sun noon-6pm;
20kr joint ticket with Mølsteds Museum), by Dragør harbour, is devoted
to the maritime history of the village, from the thirteenth-century
herring trade to the arrival of the Dutch. Loads of outdoor activities,
including trips out to sea, mainly oriented towards kids, give you a
real taste of what it meant to live off the sea. There's also a large
display of model ships, navigation instruments, and curios collected by
sailors during their travels to distant parts of the world. Mølsteds
Museum (May-Aug Sat & Sun 2-5pm; 20kr joint ticket with Dragør Museum),
in the centre of the old village on Dr Dichs Plads, displays paintings
by local celebrity Christian Mølsted (1862-1930), known for his
atmospheric and colourful paintings of the land- and seascapes around
Dragør.
